Perhaps because of a long period of disuse of enamelled metals in the 1800’s there is a tendency to consider enamel a relatively recent technique and to associate it with Art Nouveau. In fact, in the early twen-tieth century French and English artists were responsible for a new impulse in the art of enamelling, reproducing in their works the sumptuous curves of Art Nouveau and later the geometric designs of Art Deco.

 One of the pieces of major importance from this period is a necklace with pendant made by Rene Lalique about 1900, preserved in the Kunsthand-Werk Museum in Frankfurt. All of Lalique’s objects in gold with enamel were extremely delicate and refined, especially those using the technique of “cathedral” enamel which expressed the apex of grace and elegance characteristic of Art Nouveau. Another renowned French jeweler who created numerous enamelled jewels was Jean Fouquet.
